Round 13 V Tooly-tang
Only five games to go and there are plenty of crucial games emerging for our senior footballers and netballers. Let’s make sure that we get our full support behind all teams in the coming weeks. Of course that means positive support and respecting the umpires as well – no matter how your opinion differs with theirs – it’s a tough gig, remember.
Tonight after the game, we will head back to the Boga Pub for tea and a sing-fest. Be sure to dress up in your best 80’s gear and be ready to belt out some classics at the Karaoke Night. Also coming up on the 9th August is the Goods and Services Auction – this is the major fundraiser for the club, so make sure you see Gaddo or Downsy if you would like to put an item up.
Our colts kicked 3.4 to no score in the first term but saw this more than matched in the second. Despite some impressive work up forward by young Griffo and more mercurial stuff from Josh Cameron, the boys let the saints kick away in the last term. Only percentage separates us and the Roos on the ladder today, so expect a determined effort from both sides. Good luck boys. Awards from last week went to Josh Cameron (Heil Builders), Daniel Haines (Keighran’s Milk Bar), Toby O’Grady(Wiseman’s Plumbing), Andrew Patterson (KFC), Ricky McDiarmid (Mallee Milk), Andrew Brasser (Red Rooster), Sam Griffiths and Ryan McAllister.
Interestingly, the twos mirrored the colts scoring pattern – managing 6 goals, but none of them into the wind! They were not helped by their forward line in the second half consisting of two Murphy’s with bung groins and little Marty with sore calves. The amount of movement shown by these three late in the game resembled that of a statue and 2 garden gnomes. Goal of the day went to the big Ox, while coaching quote of the day came from Gaddo en-route to son Matt “Tell him if he does that again he can find somewhere else to live!” Tough love. Awards went to Matt Gadsden (Federal Hotel), Shaun O’Grady (Tripodi & Taverna), Marty Gray (Swan Hill Club), Karl Robertson (Boga Pub) and Jacob Fifita (Club Voucher).
On yet another windy day, the seniors actually outscored the Saints into the breeze. This was maintained, before a half time lead slipped away. If only the game were 15 minutes longer, we might have come home with the goods! Nathan Quick (Swan Hill Taxi) did a commendable job on Arentz, while Cliff Ryan (Swan Hill Club) was dangerous at the other end. It was also good to see Wes Sewell (Federal Hotel) and Wes Pye (Caltex) both return and find form quickly. Other awards went to Ricky Jochinke (R&K Dunstone Fuel), Brent Forsyth (Quo Vadis) and Azza Lonergan (Boga Pub). Several ‘must win’ games loom for the seniors now – starting today.
Netball
We travelled out to the middle of nowhere according to some people and in blustery conditions took on the Tooley-Tang girls. We came away with two wins for the day but that result was not a true indication of the quality of netball played. Our 13’s displayed some much improved netball and were up by a goal at half time. This was a great effort as the last time these teams met our girls went down by 19. In the end the Tooley-Tang girls were too strong and our girls lost by 12. Coach Harrop should be very proud of this result!
The A Grade game was all it was built up to be. It was fast, clean and impressive. Our girls stood up to the challenge handed to them from the second placed Tang team but just fell short in the end.
