Round 11 V's Woorinen
Some mixed results from our trip to Tigerland his week, with the most impressive wins coming from our senior footballers and the A Grade netballers (oh and don’t forget the mighty C-grade juggernaut – one seriously well coached unit).
Of course last Saturday night we had the big Magpie Ball at the Jockey Club. Firstly, a huge thanks to Wes, Jenalle, Mal, Kel, Sewelly, Quicky and others involved with the Social Committee for all their hard work to organize this night. It was a good turn up and everyone seemed to enjoy rockin out to the great band “Farren Jones’. Thanks also to Tony Symonds from Harvey Norman who very generously donated some great raffle prizes for the night (which one loser tried to claim – with the wrong ticket. He even made an acceptance speech! Loser)
Let’s clear up the predictions we made last week – Azza was a no show but would have been beaten by Rik Pumpa for worst outfit anyway (although he had some stiff competition from the Prawn, who I think borrowed the coaches black turtle neck). Bluey confirmed my worst dancer tip with his walking stick routine – closely followed by Mick Harrop, who managed to deck two girls on the dance floor (one of whom was his sister). And the ‘hardest partier’ – well let’s just say it was someone from 42 Coronation, but not one of the men I would have thought. Apparently Mr Harrison has brownie points saved up for years to come after his nursing efforts that night.
Our colts would have been expecting a good contest against the sixth-placed tigers last week, but unfortunately did not put up much of a fight. No doubt Mick will have given the boys a rev up during the week and will accept nothing less than a comprehensive win against the Dees today. A big four quarter effort is needed though – so don’t take it easy boys! Awards for last week went to Brendan Mathiske (Heil Builders), Ryan McAllister (Keighran’s Milk Bar), Andrew Brasser (Wiseman’s Plumbing), Andrew Patterson (KFC), Andrew Bennett (Mallee Milk), and Jake Haeusler (Red Rooster).
The twos had their chances to take a win against the tigers, showing some good passages of play and good delivery into the forward half. Unfortunately a lot of this effort was wasted through some lapses in concentration, not to mention some kicking for goal, which if Big Rex was commentating could only have been described as ‘shizenhousen’(apparently Murph’s kicking for goal was so bad that he was offered kicking lessons from Cliff Ryan). A big win needed today to avoid another spray from the coach and separate ourselves from the cellar dwellers on the ladder. Awards went to Brad Kelly (Federal Hotel), Justin Adams (Tripodi & Taverna), Snake Robertson (Swan Hill Club), Joel Murphy (Boga Pub), Terry Dewhurst (Club Voucher).
Despite some early wayward kicking of their own, our seniors put together an impressive 77 point victory against the Tigers. This was sealed with an emphatic 8 goal last quarter which no doubt would have pleased the coach and plenty of supporters after some previous second half fade-outs this year. There were some great performances on the day, including Adam Quigley (Boga Pub) and Ricky Jochinke (Swan Hill Club) who both put in their best games for this year to date – keep it up boys. Other awards went to the Prawn Forsyth (R&K Dunstone Fuel), Josh Jenkins (Federal Hotel), Cliff Ryan (Caltex), Westley Harrison (Quo Vadis) and Azza Lonergan (Swan Hill Taxi). Special mention also to Azza for getting a ‘little bit of leverage’ and taking down an absolute screaming contender for Mark of The Year. We won’t mention the fact that although he got higher than Joe Cocker and landed on his feet, that he then had his kicked smothered – by Harro! Perhaps Wes’ big honker got in the way………..
Netball
Saturday saw us head to Tigerland and experience the new netball facilities. Thank you to those supporters who made it across to the netball courts to see us come away with 4 out of 6 wins. It really is appreciated by our netballers to have such a great supporter base.
It was a great day for two of our junior teams. The 13’s and 15’s excited their coaches (and each other) to come away with good wins. In the 13’s Aliesha Taylor was brilliant in defence (her first time I hear!) by intercepting anything that came her way. She was backed by Sarah Symonds in wing defence who made it hard for her opponent while at the other end of the court, Bridget Donohue in wing attack and Sam Taverna in centre fed their goalies well. Another great team effort girls, well done!
In the 15’s, it looked like our girls were not going to let this one get away from the first centre. Demi Nolan played a strong game in wing attack, feeding Brodie Parsons in goal shooter and Ash Moore in goal attack. With these girls working well together it meant that the Tigers’ defence had their work cut out in the ring. At the other end of the court it was Courtney McAlister in goal defence and Taylah Weegink in wing defence who combined well to put their opponents under pressure. Let’s keep it up girls and let’s see more of this fantastic netball.
In the 17’s game, our girls tried hard against a strong seconded placed team and can certainly hold their heads up high. I know these girls have it in them to muster up more wins, so let’s unleash it girls!
The C Graders continued on their winning way with a comfortable win over the Tigers. Tamika Lynas showed that her shooting skills are in fine form and was assisted well by the little energizer bunny in Nikki Taylor in wing attack. Although the girls seemed a little tired after last week’s high pressured game, they continued to work well as a team to take the points to hold their position at the top end of the ladder. Way to go girls.
In the last 5 games our B Graders have endured one win, one draw and three losses! Time to get off the rollercoaster girls and find that form you started the season with! Renee McCaig and Steph Kennedy worked well in the ring but the fourth place Tigers were just too strong.
Our A Graders managed to prove on Saturday that they are no ‘cellar dwellers!’ In a comfortable win, Jenalle Pye applied the pressure to the Tiger’s attackers to lead the way in the A Grade revival. She combined well with Kiz (until an injury put her out) and then with Ewarty in defence, while the little rocket in Amy assisted our goalies. Bridget Austerberry in goal attack made the Tiger defence work hard and was well supported by Streetie in the ring. Well done girls, it really was a pleasure to watch you take this game in impressive fashion – we want more!
