Round 10 vs Kerang

Regardless of what happens on the field or courts today, the Magpie faithful are set for a big one tonight. The Magpie Ball is on tonight at the Jockey Club from 8pm onwards. Remember, it is a black tie affair, so dress up and put your dancing shoes on to carve it up as the band plays all night. Don’t worry if you haven’t got your ticket, they will be available at the door; $60 for adults and $30 for juniors. The all inclusive ticket price includes drinks (beer, wine, softdrink), finger food, entertainment and door prizes.

This promises to be a great night, so make sure you get there. Predictions for the evening are as follows Trendiest Suit: one of the Lonergans, Worst Dancer: Brent Forsyth or Joey Murphy, Drunkest Man: Someone at 42 Coronation Avenue. Prove me wrong folks, prove me wrong. It also happens to be school holidays, so expect the teachers to be dusting the chalk off their hands and giving it a red hot crack – because we all know how hard these fine people work.

Our colts came up against the yardstick of their competition and found out what it will require to play finals football. Toby O’Grady led from the front all day and found assistance from the likes of Ricky McDiarmid, Rhys Bull and Ryan McAlister. Unfortunately the young Magpies just could not match the running style of the impressive Blues unit, who moved the ball so well they could probably test one or two senior sides in the competition. Today presents another one of those ‘all important’ games which our boys need to win to keep their finals hopes alive. Good luck Mick and the boys. Awards last week went to Andrew Patterson (Heil Builders), Brendan Mathiske (Keighran’s Milk Bar), Jacob Fifita (Wiseman’s Plumbing), Daniel Haines (KFC), Andrew Brasser (Mallee Milk), and Kiel Tripcony (Red Rooster).

Anyone in the rooms before the twos game could have thought it was a grand final, such was the intensity and enthusiasm shown in the pre-game warm-ups (?!). Unfortunately the intensity was not quite there on the field, as the Magpies tried hard but could not find an avenue to goal. A couple of wins are possible in the next fortnight, but it is clear as day that some more training is required from a few. They Awards went to Brett Davies (Federal Hotel), Sam Griffiths (Tripodi & Taverna), Shaun Demario (Swan Hill Club), Karl Robertson (Boga Pub), Dale Shipham (Club Voucher), Joey Murphy and Terry Dewhurst.

In front of an impressive crowd for both sides, the Magpie seniors came out firing, with all indications they were going to take it up to the top side. Despite an almost dominant first quarter, one was left thinking what could have happened if we had gone into the first break with 7.4 on the board rather than 4.7. From there, things went Kerang’s way, Boga losing Sewelly to injury and Clifford to a slip of the tongue. Kerang’s depth was a major factor in the end, as they rotated quality players off the pine, while we had a big bald bloke come out of the twos, who was more concerned with whether he could have a pie while warming the bench most of the day. Awards went to Mr Harrison (Swan Hill Taxi), Wes Pye (R&K Dunstone Fuel), Nathan Quick (Swan Hill Club), Matt Fleming (Federal Hotel), Aaron Lonergan (Caltex), Toby O’Grady (Quo Vadis) and Willy Watson (Boga Pub).

Let’s make sure all football sides switch on today and register victories to get their seasons back on track and set the tone for a big night at the ball!

Netball

If anyone listened to the ranting and raving in last week’s record about how amazing the netball was, then you would have come over to the netball courts on Saturday and witnessed some more thrilling netball. Even though we only came away with 2 out of 6 wins for the day, our juniors displayed some exciting and skillful netball. It was fantastic to watch our girls put into practice the skills and plays they have been working on at training. I’m sure their coaches were impressed. Keep it up girls.

In our two wins for the round, our A Grade girls have finally found that form I’ve been talking about! In a thriller they combined well across the court and played as a determined team to shut down the Kerang side. This should see them with enough confidence now to prove to the rest of the competition that they mean business! Watch out finals!

In C Grade the pressure was on from the first whistle! It was 1st vs. 3rd and in an outstanding TEAM effort the C Graders rode above the challenges and took the points. It was great to see that when the game was in the balance that our girls kept cool and in control. Your coach was very proud of you! The Lake Boga girls would also like to wish Tracey from the Kerang side all the best and speedy recovery after her fall on Saturday.
